VIDAL’S PROTRACTED
MOVE A POTENTIAL WIN FOR JUVE!
The
protracted saga surrounding the transfer of Italian Serie A Champions Juventus’
Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal to former English Premier League Champions
Manchester United continues with speculation rife of his impending move. Vidal,
fresh from his World Cup exploits where he played a pivotal role in his
nation’s World cup campaign in Brazil seems a tidbit undecided if not uncertain
with a £50 million (€63m) transfer bid. With a “carrot” in the form of a
£316,000 per week pay cheque dangling in his face; it’s hard not to see his
dilemma.
Hypothetically
if the move does go through what would Vidal’s transfer portend for both teams
and the player? Well for one Vidal is arguably one of the best if not the best “box
to box” midfielder in world football. Quick, explosive, hard tackling, tough on
one on one marking and with an eye for goal all summarizes Vidal’s attributes. So
a potential move would add world class quality and premium to a midfield that has
struggled in the past season finishing seventh in the previous season and stark
in the middle of a rebuilding program after the failed David Moyes experiment
gone wrong after the departure of the long serving Sir Alex Ferguson. With the
recent acquisition of former Dutch Coach Louis Van Gaal, does he have the
patience to wait with no certainty that the current endevours will work, keeping
in mind that the Red Devils will not be featuring in the U.E.F.A Champions
League?
The Old Lady
of Europe’s house has increasingly looked like a house of cards after the
recent departure by mutual consent of Manager Antonio Cont’e. It’s alleged that
Cont’e, who has since been replaced by former Rossoneri Coach Masimilliano
Allegri, had been unhappy with Juve’s transfer policy and activities or lack of
in the transfer market. With one Manager leaving and another one coming on
board it’s obvious what a quandary the Old Lady of Europe is in and therefore understandably
instinctively inclined to hold on to her best players until the new manager at
the very least finds some bearing. Recent pre-season friendly matches have been
lackluster at best with the Bianconeri yet to register a win and enduring a
shocking 3-2 defeat to fifth tier Lucento recently.
Vidal has
been at the heart of the Bianconeri’s midfield in a trio alongside playmaker
Andreas Pirlo and the towering Frenchman Paul Pogba, who himself has been the
subject of suitors in the form of London club side Chelsea.
So where does
this leave Vidal? At 27 years he is definitely at the height of his powers and
his curve can only go in either of two directions. Without any major injury, he
can at least sustain his current form for another two to three seasons or he
can start tapering down. With that in mind, considering that if he sees out his
current contract which runs until 2016, he will be hard pressed to find any
suitor who would be willing to offer a contract anywhere near what the Red
Devil’s are currently offering, it would be difficult for him to walk away from
such a tempting offer. As for the Bianconeri, with a player in their possession
who can burst the bank and potentially rack in €63m! With Pirlo getting older,
an ageing defense and a few areas that would require strengthening, what Juve
would lose with one player in Vidal, can be compensated by the financial
ability to bring in several players that can strengthen the team in the long
haul and make the team more formidable.
